I have 3 onkyo speakers and a 2. 1 computer speaker set. I am planning on buying a 5. 1 receiver. Would i be able to use the 3 real speakers for front left front right and center, then use the computer speakers for the rear? I’m assuming i would have to cut the cable on the computer speakers to make them connectible. Is this correct? Thanks.

it’s is not advisable, because you would have to insure the the speakers impedence matches that of the signal feed from the amp or you could burn out the voice coils in the speakers or overheat and damage the amp, both very bad things….
Also when matching the impedence of the speakers to the amp take into account what rating system each uses:
Continous: rated continous output at a single frequency
Program: rated output for multiple frequncey = 2 x continue
Peak: maximum output for less than a sec.
RMS: average power output most common = peak x 0.707
Peak 2 Peak: simply for marketing just = peak x 2
PMPO (peak music power output): Simply for marketing again = peak 2 peak x 2 or peak x 4..
the main thing is that the computer speakers match the output impedance of the 5.1 receiver. ( 8 ohm output to 8 ohm speaker.)
the onkyo’s may be an odd impedance..
No just because of the fact that computer speakers are powered and they run on a lot less wattage than a normal speaker.
