My husband would like to set up some speakers on the porch and connect them to the computer. The speakers are standard with speaker wire positive and negative inputs. What kind of connection or device do I need to connect that to my audio outputs on my computer?

Non-powered speakers need an amplification device to power them. A computers Line Out is a line level output designed to provide signal to an amplifier to power speakers.
If your computers sound device has a Speaker Out jack, that will power speakers but not very loud or far away.
You need a amp, consider routing your computers line output to a stereo unit or sound device like a boom box that has a aux input, there are also tape casstte adapters to convert devices with a casstte player into an aux input device. http://www.rapdealer.de/images/mp3adapte…
This kind of speakers is not meant for computer it is for use on normal amp or stereos. What you need is a ‘mini din to rca out adapter’. Its cheap and simple device. By using this than you could connect the pc to the amp or stereo. Than connect the speakers. Cheers.
The simple answer is: An amplifier & converter cable.
There are several ways to do it and it all depends on what level of audio fanatics you are. as stated, the PC does not amplify the sound enough to adequately reproduce good sound on it’s own. the best way to do this set up is as follows:
(all items are linked to radioshack. com items for visual aid and are not necessarily recommended for value or quality)
From PC speaker OUT jack to STEREO 3.5MM RCA ADAPTER CABLEhttp://www.radioshack.com/product/index.…
this cable will allow you to connect your PC to an amplifier:http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.…
The amp will provide you with the connectors for your speakers.
if you have a home theater audio/video amplifier with A/B speaker output, you could go from PC to cable adapter, to theater amp input. connect your porch speakers to the B speaker outputs on the amp. when the B switch is selected on the amp, any audio selected/conected to the amp, (CD player, DVD, VHS, Radio, PC, Etc.) will be played through the porch speakers. You could also install a volume control on the porch to have easy acess to the volume levels.
Just keep in mind with this set-up that if you are watching a movie and the B is selected, it will not be playing in surround sound as the porch speakes will be playing instead of the surround speakers untill the A speaked is selected again… unless your amplifier is capable of playing all speakers at the same time.
This is easy, you need to get an adapter cable. You can generally get one from Radio shack. Something that is called a mini-din (or 1/8 ” Male”) to RCA stereo adapters.
They also make these for Ipods, so you can get them from other kinds of stores
